Clinical Observation of Bacteremia

Abstract
A clinical observation on 449 cases with bactermia among 76,478 in-patients admitted to Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea, from January 1964 to December 1970, was done, and the results were as follows:
1) The incidence of bactermia was 0.58% Gram-negative bactermia (0.39%), was more common than gram-positive bactermia(0.19%).
3) The annual incidence of bactermia has been, increasing.
4) Gram-positive bactermia were mainly, due to S. aureus, while gram-negative due to salmonellas.
5) The ages of the patients with gram-positive bactermia were mostly under 30 and one third of them under 10, but that of gram negative were 20?30.
6) The portal of entry in gram positive bacteremia was generally unknown, but the cost of known were genitourinary tract, respiratory system, and the skin, while that in gram-negative the gastrointestinal tract in two-thirds of the total.
7) The mortality of the total bacterima was 22.5%; that of gram-positive was 31.3%; and that of gram negative 18.3%.
8) The mortality of bactermia from hospital infection was much higher that from non-hospital infection.
9) The mortality of bactermia in patients with non-infectious underlying diseases was much higher that of the total mortality.
10) The annual mortality bactermia was not increased, compared to increased incidence of it.
